Update on Bisphenol A (BPA) for Use in Food: January 2010
Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical that has been present in many hard plastic bottles and metal-based food and beverage cans since the 1960s.
Studies employing standardized toxicity tests have thus far supported the safety of current low levels of human exposure to BPA. However, on the basis of results from recent studies using novel approaches to test for subtle effects, both the National Toxicology Program at the National Institutes of Health and FDA have some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and young children. In cooperation with the National Toxicology Program, FDA’s National Center for Toxicological Research is carrying out in-depth studies to answer key questions and clarify uncertainties about the risks of BPA.
In the interim:
FDA is also supporting recommendations from the Department of Health and Human Services for infant feeding and food preparation to reduce exposure to BPA.
FDA is not recommending that families change the use of infant formula or foods, as the benefit of a stable source of good nutrition outweighs the potential risk from BPA exposure.

Bisphenol A, the widely used compound in polycarbonate plastic, has the ability to alter the activity of genes in normal breast cells in ways that resemble what is found in extremely dangerous breast cancers, according to a new study.
The study, conducted by researchers in California and published this month in the journal Cancer Research, found that many genes in non-cancerous breast cells exposed to trace amounts of bisphenol A began acting in a way that closely resembled the gene activity in highly aggressive breast tumours that led to an increased likelihood that women would die of the disease.
The link “is highly supportive of the concept that overexposure to BPA and/or similar compounds could be an underlying factor in the aggressiveness, if not in the causality” of breast cancers, said Shanaz Dairkee, lead author of the study and senior scientist at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute in San Francisco, in an e-mail.
The study results were designated a “priority report” by the journal, published by the American Association for Cancer Research, one of the world’s largest scientific organizations devoted to cancer studies.
Earlier this week, it was disclosed that Health Canada has concluded bisphenol A, or BPA, is a dangerous substance, making it the first regulatory body in the world to reach such a determination. An announcement on possible measures to curb its use is expected soon from federal Health Minister Tony Clement.
BPA, is one of the most widely used synthetic chemicals in modern industry. It is the basic building block for polycarbonate, the see-through, shatterproof plastic that resembles glass.
Bisphenol A is also used to make the epoxy resins lining most tin cans, along with some dental sealants, sports helmets and compact discs.
Many scientists are looking at the possible links between breast cancer and BPA because the synthetic chemical is able to mimic estrogen and was tested in the search for estrogen drugs before industry began using it to make polycarbonate plastic.
There is strong evidence linking breast cancer to long-term estrogen exposure, and many researchers have been worried that BPA leaching from consumer products is giving women what amounts to an extra dose of hormones, raising lifetime risk of malignancy.
Animal experiments have found that fetal or early life exposures to BPA cause lesions that may lead to increased susceptibility to mammary gland tumours later in life, but the scientific evidence hasn’t been deemed strong enough to conclude that the chemical is also a human carcinogen. Other researchers have exposed already cancerous breast cells to BPA and found the chemical causes them to proliferate.
But the new study strengthens the case that BPA and cancer could be connected by showing the chemical has profound effects on the genes in breast cells that do not yet show cancerous tendencies.
The researchers, who also included scientists at Stanford Genome Technology Center at Stanford University’s medical school, conducted the study by taking a small sample of normal, non-cancerous cells from the unaffected breasts of eight women who already had breast cancer.
Test tube experiments are often criticized because they only expose tissues to a few influences, while in living things there are thousands of chemicals acting on cells.
But to try to recreate realistic conditions that might mirror what is actually happening in women, the researchers exposed these cells to estrogen and progesterone in concentrations similar to what women experience in the last half of their menstrual cycles, and minute concentrations of BPA, equal to 22 parts per billion, an amount similar to what has been found leaching into some food from cans. A part per billion is a tiny amount, equivalent to approximately one second of elapsed time over a span of 32 years.
Tests were also run giving the cells only estrogen and mixtures of estrogen and progesterone.
The researchers found that the hormones and BPA left unique fingerprints on genes, inducing some of them to turn on or off, what in science is termed gene expression. They also observed that progesterone would turn off dangerous genes that had been activated by estrogen, only to have BPA turn the genes on again.
“As soon as BPA was presented to the cells, they reversed back as if they had gotten another whopping dose of estrogen and completely reversed the progesterone calming effect on the cells,” Dr. Dairkee said.
Estrogen and BPA influenced 123 genes in common. But estrogen had the unique ability to affect 28 genes, while BPA was even more influential, being able to activate or deactivate another 52 genes.
The researchers then compared the response they found in normal tissue with publicly available gene expression profiles from about 525 breast tumours taken from cancer patients in the United States, Britain, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden. They noted that the tissue they had exposed to BPA had a “striking association with tumour aggressiveness,” according to the study.

Breast Feeding
For newborn baby, any nutrient in this world would never have been better than breast milk. Breast milk in the first few days after delivery will be yellowish and just sufficient amount for your baby. This 1st lot breast milk has high contents of protein and essential immunity against cold, diarrhea, and allergy. It also performs as a laxative to expel 1st time feces from your baby to prevent hepatitis in a newborn.
Mammary gland will start producing real milk in 4 – 5 days after delivery. The milk will be bluish containing sufficient nutrients for the development of baby. Breast milk has inconsistent components which can be changed all the times. Milk will flow fast when baby starts drawing in milk in first few minutes. This portion contains high protein while low fat and energy. After, milk will flow slower and contains higher fat and energy. Baby’s sucking will adjust balance of nutrients in breast milk required for the development.
Breast milk has essential nutrition that is easier absorbed by baby’s digestion than powdered milk so little liver and kidney which are not fully developed do not have to work hard to expel waste from your baby’s body.
Mom should breast feed her baby within half an hour after delivery and should feed every 2 hours or as needed. The more the baby sucks, the more the mother produces milk.
During first 4 months maternity leave, breast milk is highly recommended to feed your baby. When return work, expelled breast milk during the day can be cold stored in closed container for breast feeding your baby when you get home.

Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms
Missed your period?
The first thing that we think of when our period is missed is “Am I pregnant?”. There are other most common reasons that cause our delayed period such as stress, illness, changes in medications which can probably have side effects, being overweight or underweight, peri-menopause, and finally yes! being pregnant.
What to do next? You should call to make prenatal appointment with your midwife or doctor. Practically, you should leave the missed period for about 10 days and bring your morning urine when you go to see the doctor.
Frequent urination?
Frequent urination can be a sign of early pregnancy and can continue through the third trimester.
The need to pee often in the early weeks of pregnancy is caused by extra blood and fluid used in pregnancy that is excreted through your kidneys. As your pregnancy progresses, the baby will grow enough to put pressure on your bladders and this causes your need to pee even more often.
Breast Changes?
It is true that your breasts will be changed in response to your pregnancy in preparation for breastfeeding. Some common symptoms of your breast during pregnancy are such as sore breasts usually most intense in the first trimester, darker and larger nipples as your pregnancy progresses, larger breasts in the beginning of second trimester, and leaking of colostrums.
Nausea or Vomiting?
Morning sickness can start as early as the pregnancy test is positive. You can experience the morning sickness at anytime of the day or night although most women experience their uneasiness in the morning probably because of empty stomach.
Some women feel nausea when receive fishy or dislike smell and then vomiting. This symptom will last about two to three weeks although some women have it through their pregnancy.
Fatigue?
Pregnancy fatigue can be an early pregnancy symptom. Some women feel like they can fall asleep at all time. It is not simple feeling like feeling a bit groggy when you wake up. This symptom can start at an early stage when you take a pregnancy test. It is typically severe in the first trimester and start clearing up by the beginning of the second trimester. Most women feel again fatigue in the last trimester.
Skin change?
Your skin will probably be changed during your pregnancy. Stretch marks are probably the most discussed skin changes during pregnancy. The stretch marks usually show up during the later half of the pregnancy. The majority will be on the lower abdomen while some can also be found on thighs, hips, breasts and arms. They do fade away after you have the baby. It will become silver lines.
About 45 – 70% of mother will also experience Masks of Pregnancy in the beginning of forth or fifth month of the pregnancy. The greater increased quantity of Melanotropin during pregnancy causes pigmentation over the noses, cheeks, and forehead of an expectant mom. This is not caused by sunlight while it will also fade after the birth.
Some first time moms experience the showing up of Linea Negra around their third month of pregnancy. The Linea Negra is a darker line extending from the pubic bone to fundus.
While many women find the hormones during their pregnancy make their skin radiant and aglow, many women find their skin more oily and susceptible to acne breakouts. Ensure your drinking plenty of water and wash your face.
Weight Gain?
It is different for everyone but most women gain about 25 to 30 pounds (11 to 14 kilos) through the pregnancy while not more than 3 pounds (2 kilos) gain in the first 12 weeks and about 1 pound (0.454 kilo) a week after that. You should keep your weight gain to the normal amount for healthy womb and not pack on a lot of unnecessary pounds that will be hard to lose later and to prevent you from toxemia of pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about how much weight you should gain.
Additional Tip ::
During pregnancy, you will experience a variety of physical and emotional changes. Also, many of the pregnancy symptoms in early weeks can be similar to regular pre-menstruation discomforts.

Though you may be traveling less frequently, once you have a baby till he/she is a little old, it does not mean that you stop taking holidays because of the little ones. But, you will have to make elaborate plans well in advance. Being away from home is a big change in routine for both, you and your baby, so you will have to plan ahead, even anticipate problems and be prepared to deal with them, so that the entire family enjoys a good holiday. Taking advice from parents, who have taken their children on holidays, is a good idea. Here are a few tips about things that worked for other parents while traveling with a baby.
roxy 1.jpgTips for Traveling With a Baby
While booking a holiday, find out what facilities the tour operator provides. Children, who are two years or below, usually travel for free. Your baby will require a passport.
Find out what kind of childcare facilities the operator provides, such as baby cots, prams, highchairs etc., so that you do not have to carry these things with you.
Once you decide on the holiday location, consult your doctor about the vaccination your baby requires before you decide the holiday dates. If there are vaccines to be taken, it is best to take them a little before the holiday date. Some vaccines cannot be taken together and may need a few weeks in between. So, you will need time to vaccinate your baby.
The most difficult part of your holiday will be the journey, and with a small baby, it will not be easy. You should book an air cot well in advance. Get seats that are together, so that you have ample space on the flight. Book meals for your children in advance, it would help if they could be served before you are served.
If you are hiring a car, ask the company to provide you with a baby seat, so that you don’t have to carry one.
Take toys for the journey, old and new ones, so that the baby will be occupied and will not get tired of the journey.
There could be delays on the way, so you should carry enough snacks for the baby, especially drinks. It is better if the snacks don’t consist of sticky food, as they are messy.
It is easier to travel if you are breast-feeding, you don’t have to worry about sterilized bottles or clean water to make bottle-feeds.
Take your baby sling or back carrier it will occupy less space and it will be easy to carry the baby around.
If you are holidaying in a place where the weather is hot, make sure that you carry sun block for your baby as his/her skin is delicate and more likely to get sunburns.
While booking your holiday, you can book a hotel that provides childcare facilities such as nannies, cr?ches etc. You should check them before using them and only avail them when you are sure your baby will be well taken care of.
